The Birth of Vishwakarma

According to some legends, Vishwakarma was born from the forehead of Brahma, the creator of the universe. He was endowed with the power of creation and craftsmanship by Brahma. He assisted Brahma in the creation of the world and all living beings. He also designed and built the celestial abodes of gods and goddesses, such as Indra’s palace, Varuna’s palace, Kubera’s palace, etc.

According to some other legends, Vishwakarma was born from the Samudra Manthan or the churning of the ocean by gods and demons. He emerged from the ocean along with other divine treasures, such as Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow, Kalpavriksha, the wish-fulfilling tree, etc. He was given the responsibility of crafting various divine objects for gods and goddesses, such as Sudarshana Chakra for Vishnu, Trishula for Shiva, Vajra for Indra, etc.

In some parts of India, such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, etc., it is celebrated on September 18th (Like this year 2023) regardless of the lunar calendar. In some other parts of India, such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, etc., it is celebrated a day after Diwali or on Kartik Shukla Pratipada according to the lunar calendar.
